Layered lighting: How to combine 3 types of light and transform your living room like a true interior designer

Slojevita rasvjeta: Kako kombinirati 3 vrste svjetla kao dizajner

A single ceiling light can't do everything you need it to – it's not designed to. Professional interior designers always work with three layers of light, and this is the secret that makes photographed interiors look warmer, deeper, and more inviting than your own home. The good news: you can replicate this yourself, without an architect and without breaking the bank.

Step into any space that appears perfectly decorated – a hotel, a restaurant, a friend's house that you've always admired – and look at the lighting. We bet it's not just one lamp. There is always Pendant or chandelier which gives basic light, a lamp next to the sofa or the shelving unit which makes the space warm, and Something that highlights a detail — a picture on the wall, a plant, a shelf with books. That's layered lighting at work.

💡 Layered lighting combines three types of illumination: (1) ambient lighting – general illumination of the entire space, (2) Work lighting — focused light for specific activities, and (3) accent lighting — decorative highlighting of architectural details or ornaments. Each of these layers has a different temperature, intensity, and position in space.

Layer 1 — General Lighting: The Foundation of Everything

General lighting This is your first and most important layer. It evenly illuminates the entire room, eliminates dark corners, and allows for safe movement. Without it, the other layers are pointless as there is no “canvas” to paint them on.

What is used for general lighting?

  • Chandelier in the centre of the room — a classic choice that both decorates and illuminates
  • Ceiling light (Flush-mount ceiling light) — for low ceilings or minimalist interiors
  • Recessed lights (spots) — discreet, ideal for modern spaces
  • LED strip lighting — indirect, soft light without shadow

Temperature 2700K–3000K (warm white) for the living room and dining room. Intensity 150–300 lumens per m² (calculate: m² of the room × 200 lm for a standard living room).

DUMA shop selection: A bespoke pendant light – with a coloured cable that complements your interior, a shade to match your furniture style, and a filament bulb for a warm glow – is the ideal ambient lighting that also serves as a first-layer decorative element.

Layer 2 – Task lighting: Light that does the job

Work lighting the light is focused on specific activities — reading a book, working on a laptop, cooking, applying makeup. Without it, the general lighting is never bright enough for precise tasks without overshadowing the entire space.

Where should task lighting be placed in a living room?

AreaLamp tipTemperaturePosition
Reading cornerFloor lamp with lampshade3000–4000KOver the shoulder, from the left or right
DeskDesk lamp with adjustable arm4000KThe opposite side of the dominant hand
Sofa / bookshelfAdjustable wall light3000K150–170 cm from the floor
Kitchen worktopUnder-cabinet lighting3000KAlong the front edge of the cabinet, towards the panel

Common mistake: Floor lamps are installed too late – when the furniture is already in place. Always plan the lamp's position TOGETHER with the sofa/armchair's position, as the lamp should go behind the shoulder of the person sitting, not behind the sofa's backrest. A 30 cm difference makes the difference between perfect and unusable.

DUMA store tip: Of course, if you visit the DUMA store, we also have several attractive solutions for when there isn't enough space for a floor lamp; read more about that soon...

Layer 3 — Accent Lighting: The Soul of the Interior

Accent lighting It’s what transforms your living room from “a well-lit room” into “a room with character.” Its task is not to illuminate people – but to highlight things: a picture on the wall, a bookshelf, a plant, an architectural detail, a wall texture.

How to achieve accent lighting?

  • Wall lamp directed upwards or downwards — highlights the texture of the wall or creates a dramatic shadow
  • Floor or table lamp a focused corner that tells a story
  • Decorative filament bulb without a lampshade — an object that draws the eye in itself
  • SMART track lighting with spotlights — emphasises elements and details

DUMA exclusive: A custom wall light, with a cable colour that precisely matches your wallpaper or wooden elements, provides an accent layer that is both functional and decorative. A single wall light with a dimmable filament bulb can transform the entire feel of a room.

How to calculate how many lumens your living room needs?

This is a question nobody asks until they buy a lamp that's too weak or too strong. A simple formula:

📐 Formula for calculating lumens:

General lighting: m² of room × 150–200 lm = total lumens required
Example Living room 20 m² → 20 × 175 = 3500 lm total (spread across multiple sources)

Work lighting (Reading, Work): 400–800 lm focused on the work surface
Accent lighting: 200–400 lm directed at featured element

Frequently Asked Questions about Layered Lighting

Do I need a dimmer for layered lighting?

A dimmer isn't compulsory, but every designer recommends it for ambient and accent lighting. With a dimmer, a single switch controls completely different atmospheres: 100% for cleaning, 60% for evening relaxation, 20% for film. DUMA Store offers dimmable LED bulbs compatible with Legrand, Schneider and standard dimmers. SMART strip lighting also allows dimming and adjustment of light warmth to suit current needs.

Can I combine different lamp styles in the same room?

Yes — under one condition: each lamp should have a common design “language.” This could be the same cord colour (e.g. all black textile cord), the same metal finishes (all bronze lamp holders), or the same bulb temperature. One common element holds different styles together and makes the room feel considered, rather than chaotic. In DUMA Store, by choosing the cords and lamp holders for all lamps, you achieve this cohesion. Certainly, if you have a lamp you genuinely want to keep in your home for emotional reasons, don't be discouraged by Instagram tips and overly perfect interior photos, because home is a place where we want to feel good, not just reside.

How many layers does a small living room (up to 15 m²) need?

Even small spaces need all three layers – but in smaller doses. One smaller pendant or ceiling light (ambient lighting), one floor or table lamp (task lighting), and an interesting wall light (accent lighting). Layered lighting in small spaces doesn’t take up room – it visually enlarges it by distributing light sources.

❓ What is “bias lighting” behind a television and is it useful?

Bias lighting is indirect lighting installed behind the TV screen. It reduces the contrast between the dimly lit room and the bright screen, thereby reducing eye strain by 30–50%. A warm LED strip (2700–3000K) behind the TV is the simplest and cheapest accent feature that all experts recommend.
